Modern French is a Romance language derived from Latin just like Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and other Mediterranean languages. Like all languages, French has evolved considerably over time. During medieval times, French became the language of literature, and by the Renaissance, writers such as Rabelais and Ronsard were already writing in a language that is fully understandable to today’s scholarly reader.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, French was considered the language of diplomacy, and the second most important language for international negotiations (behind English). Today, it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and one of the two official languages, along with English, of the International Olympic Committee and the International Red Cross, among many other organizations.

French was standardized around the 17th and 18th centuries. This standardization suffered from the disappearance of regional French dialects, especially those spoken in central and northern France.

      Aprendizaje de calidad!!

      f , 2026
